Haxball Flash on HTML

Postby Bot88 » April 30th, 2020, 8:00 am

As everyone knows HTML is quite different of Flash, now the game has a lot of spam battles and in my opinion it isn't fun anymore.
So me and Mod decided to create a map with the settings of the HaxBall Flash. (the ball is faster and smaller).
To be honest the map bringed me a bit of nostalgia and I think everyone who loved the gameplay of Flash should try it. Maybe this can be the revolution that HaxBall needs and who knows, it can become the new official map. ^^
You can download the map on the link below and after give us your opinion about it and if you think there are things we should change. Depending on the feedback then we can put the same settings for the classic map.

Here is a short rec of the gameplay on the map, we didn't use kick_ratelimit but we advise you to still use it.

Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Wise men speak because they have something to say, fools because they have to say something.

No one is more hated than he who speaks the truth.

Courage is knowing what not to fear.

Showing off is the fool's idea of glory.

honestly, this is nothing like flash... with that map players with an higher extrapolation will abuse it even more.

Unfortunately this is not the flash gameplay but the effort is appreciated xd.

The ball was the same size and shape, I originally thought the ball was different shaped but that turned out only to be a visual bug and not on the physics.

What made Flash different from HTML was the tiny (like 10msec) Input Delay on all actions (kick and all arrow keys), which made the movement heavier and slightly slower, but in a way that required more skill to do things. It also made spams predictable with patterns, and rewarded superior positioning more to win the spam instead of fast x. It ALSO made defences pay a much bigger price for being slightly out of position/uncoordinated, because the heavier movement made it much harder to recover from a mis-step.

The map, ball, player, everything is identical, even the physics of kick speed, player top speed etc.. Its just the subtle Input Delay that gave the game structure and patterns, which has disappeared. Thats why many people (who presumably didn't take advantage of these patterns in Flash) didn't notice any difference on HTML, because their gameplay never relied on reading patterns.

So if its possible and you know how to make a map where every movement, and every kick, has a 10msec delay (roughly, needs to be tried and tested for exact number), then you will successful replicate the Flash physics on HTML 100% identical.

We knew the ball was larger on Flash, we just put the ball a little bit smaller because with extrapolation is easier for players to move than it was on Flash, so making the ball smaller makes it harder for to defend that meaning that players will be more afraid to rush you and to go spam, because is more likely they will get punished

Its subjective, but what I said will make the game Flash physics again.

Lets not forget, nobody had an issue with those slower Flash physics, they are what created the Haxball's success for many years, not these new HTML physics (which are keeping players only because of the reputation built with the Flash physics over 7years).

try to play 1 fs with the 2 maps, u will see a huge difference, this map is really better, the ball is faster and is not only about spam,in the first half we attack all the time and quick passes, we changed the map the game was just spam, just see for yourselves

I might be risking myself to be considered as a dumbo in this topic, but if everything has a 10msec delay on Flash, then why setting up extrapolation by 10msec does not work into converting the game to a more "Flashier gameplay", since technically the command "extrapolation" is input delay in itself?

From what I have seen from the few fses I have played on this map goals are even more random than they are now on big with the ball deflecting all over the place due to the increased speed of the ball. Shooting the ball via the wall to score will probably be too OP for strikers aswell
